What is noor?
noor is a private, AI-assisted journal. You speak or write about your day, and noor reflects it back: how you seem to be feeling, the patterns underneath, and gentle questions worth sitting with. Sofia, your AI companion, is there in between entries too. The name means "light" in Arabic — that's the whole idea: a little light on what's already there.
Do I have to journal every day?
No. noor celebrates consistency — streaks glow, milestones feel good — but it will never guilt you, shame a missed day, or manufacture urgency to pull you back. That's a design principle, not an accident. Most people find a rhythm of a few entries a week; the right amount is whatever helps.
Where does noor run?
noor is a web app designed for your phone — it runs in any modern browser, installs to your home screen, and works just as well on a laptop. No app store required.

AI & privacy

Is my journal private?
Yes. In guest mode your journal lives on your device. If you turn on Cloud Sync, it's stored encrypted in transit on Google Firebase so you can recover it across devices. Your entries are never sold, never used for advertising, and you can export everything (JSON/CSV) or permanently delete it from Settings at any time. The full details are in our Privacy Policy — written in plain language.
What AI powers noor?
Reflections, insights, and voice are generated by models from Anthropic (Claude) and Google (Gemini). Your text is sent to these providers solely to produce the response you asked for — never for advertising. AI output can be imperfect, which is why noor frames everything as reflection, not instruction.
Does Sofia actually remember me?
Sofia keeps a short, AI-generated summary of the recurring themes in your journal — a running memory of what matters to you — so conversations have continuity instead of starting from zero. It lives with your profile, updates as you write, and is removed when you delete your data.

Billing

Can I use noor for free?
Yes, genuinely. The free plan includes unlimited journal entries, 3 AI reflections a day, 5 Sofia messages a week, and your full mood history and charts — enough to build a real habit. Premium removes the limits and adds deeper analysis.
How much does Premium cost?
Premium is R129/month, or R699/year (about R58 / month). There's also a Duo plan — R1 049/year for two people — where you and a friend both get full Premium and become each other's accountability partners.
How do I cancel?
Any time, in a couple of taps. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period, and your journal stays yours — the free plan keeps working with everything you've written. Payments are processed securely by Paystack; we never see your card details.

Safety

Is noor therapy?
No — and we're careful about this. noor is a self-reflection and journaling tool. Sofia is an AI companion, not a licensed therapist, and nothing in noor is medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Many people use noor alongside professional support, and if you're struggling, a qualified professional is the right place to start. The app's SOS screen lists crisis resources at all times.
Who can use noor?
noor is for adults, 18 and over. The first time you open the app it asks you to confirm you're 18 or older — before you create a profile, and before you can use it as a guest — and you can't get past that question without confirming. We ask only for the confirmation itself, never your date of birth. Journal entries are sensitive personal information, so this is both our policy and a requirement we take seriously under South Africa's POPIA.
What if I'm in crisis?
Please don't use noor as an emergency service — it can't contact anyone for you and doesn't monitor entries in real time. If you're in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact your local emergency number or a crisis line immediately. The app's SOS screen keeps crisis resources one tap away, always free.
